This one took far too much thought.
Yeah, I know. A surfeit of thought is not something I’m regularly accused of, and quite rightly so. This particular blog entry, however was one that had me searching high and low (mainly low) for inspiration.
It’s not like the last week has been all that eventful, you see. Nothing much has happened. Yes, there was a rather nice coffee out with the folks, but that’s about the crux of it. Apart from that, it’s been all quiet on the Western Front (possibly the Eastern, Northern, and Southern Fronts, too.
So, let’s discuss something that’s going to be happening.
Service With A Sigh
This particular ‘something’ actually links back to a post I, um, posted, just two weeks ago (Link is here), regarding the repair and maintenance of my wheelchair.
If you remember, I was finding the service I receive somewhat spotty (to say the least). Parts were taking an inordinate time to come into stock and, sometimes, just for fun, would go missing, or turn out to be the wrong ones.
So, I’ve taken matters into my own hands.
Small
This equates to the spending of some of my birthday money (Thank you sisters-dear both) at a well known online rain-forest-y retailer in order to buy a small set of small screwdrivers and a small set of small Allen keys. All for the purpose of getting a little more hands on when it comes to the general upkeep of my wheels.
So, here is the plan.
Every week, I intend to use the screwdrivers (or at least one of them, anyway), to tighten any and all screws I can find that look a little loose (yes, there is a joke there, but it’s far too accurate to be funny). I then intend to use the Allen keys to remove the front castors, clean out the dog/cat hair clogging them up, maybe add a dash of WD40, and reassemble them.
No, I can’t see anything going wrong there, either.

Wire-Less
What we have to bear in mind here, is that we’re talking about a man (me), who is astoundingly insufficient when it comes to practical, hands-on type matters. I couldn’t wire a plug if you gave me three goes and a lifetime’s supply of rubber insulation.
This means the running repairs will be rife with the possibility of missing screws, bits that won’t fit, and mysteriously spare parts. It means care, attention, and focu… ooh, shiny!
Sorry, what was I saying?
Oh, yeah. The cleaning of the castors in particular is a job that I can immediately see issues with. It is, therefore, a job I shall approach with as much care and diligence as I know how, with the full knowledge that if I mess up, or lose bits, the call out to rectify my mistakes could be a while in materialising (seriously, it’s a hell of a long and boring wait - and that’s from a man who’s recently seen Titanic.

As I mentioned, all of this is yet to come. The stuff has arrived and looks in good order (bearing in mind I don’t know what size the screws and, uh, Allen locks(?) on the chair are and have pretty much ordered the tools by closing my eyes and pressing ‘buy now’), but I’ve yet to drum up the courage to start anything irreversible.
So, if you’re in the area, and you hear loud swearing, please do think of me, and while you’re there you might give my wife, Tina a sympathetic thought, too.
Until next time.
