A Long, Long Time

Hello, dear reader!

They say a week is a long time in politics. It seems two is an absolute age.

Yes, it appears I chose the wrong week to be unwell. The week I faced up to writing my weekly blog post with a deep-down, full-body weariness and a complete lack of inspiration, turned out to be the week I missed the news story of the year by twenty-four little hours.

Actually, no, scratch that. I think it was less. Although time does seem to concentrate and contract when you’re talking about Liz Truss’ high speed car crash of a premiership, doesn’t it?

The point remains, however. There would, if not for an already busy day and a lingering, possibly MS related, fatigue, have been material for a blog post and a half (although it would have meant politics twice in two weeks, rather than, um, twice in two posts)

And then they go and do it again.

Money matters?

Hello, dear reader!

It’s time to address the elephant in the room.

I try to stay away from political matters, I really do. Apart from anything else, it tends to displease my mother when I stick my oar into those murky waters and risk an opinion or two.

At the moment, however, I don’t think it’s possible, other than sealing yourself in an underground crypt with your fingers firmly lodged in your lug’oles as you sing along to some loud and discordant music (I’m thinking something from the Death Metal genre. Either that or Christian ‘rock), to avoid the daily Downing Street Tragicomedies

So here goes.

Blood & Bicuspids

Hello, dear reader!

There are signs, portents if you will, that the times they are a-changing.

No, sadly, not politically, but in the broader, more seasonal sense. As I type, the rain has taken what feels like a temporary break, allowing general, oppressive murkiness to rule the skies. It’s also not that warm; not ‘get the heating on’ weather by any means (I mean, who can afford that?), but certainly what I’d classify as ‘jumper weather.

And it’s not just the bland, autumnal, weather, either. Christmas Cake, Stollen, and Mince Pies have started to hit the shops to remind us that Christmas is only ten-and-a-half weeks away. And then there’s the other, more timely stuff, the bits-and-bobs that proclaims there’s actually a holiday to be observed before Christmas.

Halloween, that celebration of all things spooky, dictates that witches hats, broomsticks, fake blood, and plastic vampire teeth are also fully in stock.

Which is fitting, because those last two items are what today’s blog is about.

Sick Note

Hello, dear readers!

This will be a quick one.

I know. I’ve said that before.

Café Culture

Hello, dear readers!

One of the wonderful things about having a new car is the sudden and undeniable urge to do some driving.

Yes, my brand new Hyundai Ioniq isn’t all that much different from my old Hyundai Ioniq, but Winnie (the name of the car in question) is still new. She still has that distinct ‘new car smell’, that sheen to her tyres. A windscreen unframed by the dust and dirt of the road. A subtle stiffness to her accelerator.

So yes, having noted all of those things, I of course must, as quickly as humanly possible, do my best to destroy them. I don’t mean by wrapping Winnie around a lamppost, you understand. I simply mean my new steed is in need of breaking in. The girl needs some miles on the clock.

So off we popped.

Of Monarchy and Motor Cars

Hello, dear readers!

There is a saying that the only constant in life is change. If ever there was a time when this was more than evident, it’s this month.

Yes, not only have we witnessed a sort of regime change at the top of the political tree (and for my feelings on that subject, read here), but the day after I posted that particular offering the country, nay, the world was shook by another seismic shift.

The Queen is dead. Long live The King.

The More Things Change

Hello, dear readers!

And welcome to the sunlit uplands of a bright, brave new world.

It’s true. Even now, as I look out the living room window, the sun is streaming through the blinds and the temperature hovering just south of uncomfortable. It’s the kind of day where all seems right with the world. The kind of day to forget about tomorrow’s worries and focus on the pleasures of the moment (steady!).

Which is good, because thinking about tomorrow should probably carry some kind of health warning.

Luckily, the endless days of this late summer seem destined to continue for some time yet, because a saviour has emerged to banish the dark clouds and the rain we actually could do with a bit of. Winter might be coming, but Liz is going to sort it all out.
