And welcome to what promises to be a very crowded month of doing not an awful lo
Why? You ask. Didn’t you just mention a firm writing schedule in your last post?
Well, yes, and in fairness, that is still operational. What I’m talking about is the rest. The downtime. The telly and the reading and the playing of computer games.
Because, tomorrow, The World Cup kicks off.
Opinion Piece
Now it’s fair to say that this World Cup is not without its controversy. The fact that it’s being co-hosted by the USA, a country that is far from its peak of popularity, thanks to its politics and its support and active participation in what could (rightly in my opinion) be called unjust wars.
This has caused something of an uproar in certain sections of social media, especially after one referee was denied entry to the US for… um… reasons. I’ve even seen some compare the competition to the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Of course there are some, mainly on the political right, who hold much different opinions.
However…
Playing Catch Up
Whilst there is a definite reason to criticise this particular competition, it is still going ahead. There is nothing I can do about that, and I’m not even sure my watching or not watching games will show up on any kind of Nielsen rating (or equivalent). In fact I’m not even sure how such figures are generated.
So, although the position may seem somewhat hypocritical, I will follow my usual routine when it comes to major tournaments. I’ll try and watch at least some of every match, be it a full game, a half, or even a final fifteen minutes. Some of those matches are at two AM, which does make things a touch difficult, but, thankfully, catch up TV should make even those games possible.
Some of those games I plan on watching on the TV, others, for the sake of a happy home, I’ll watch on the laptop. As a remedy to the doublethink, I’ll also seek out some way of stating my personal opposition to the current regime in the US and the things it is doing both internally and on the world stage; kind of like planting a tree to offset my carbon footprint.
Track Changes
My hope is that in some way a statement can be made by the players or crowds actually at the matches, especially those at which Trump or his cabinet are present in much the same way the crowd at the NBA finals or, to bring things back to 1936 a certain Jesse Owens famously did just with his performance on the track.
Oh, and in respect of the writing thing. There does seem to be a window in the afternoon where no games are being played (although, to be fair, I’ve only checked the group games). This will still be my writing window in which I’ll still be working on book number two.
Until next time!

Hey, there! If you enjoyed reading any of the above, why not take a look at some of my published work? Below you’ll find links to a number of short stories I’m lucky enough to have included in anthologies. I’d love to know what you think. My debut novel, The Heart That Died, is available now as both paperback, E-book, and on Kindle Unlimited, so I’m adding the link to that, too.
Oh, and if you like what you look-see, a nice, positive review would also be most welcome.
