Sore Eyes

Hello, dear readers,

Sometimes it’s the little things in life that make the biggest differences.

Sometimes it’s the biggest.

And then, of course, sometimes, it’s the things you thought were small but it turns out were pretty darn big all along.

My new glasses come under that third category.

Fit For Purpose
Yes, just nine days after our appointment to have our eyes checked I got the email that confirmed both Tina, my superlative spouse, and I could attend the opticians for the final fitting and collection of our new bins.

Of course, this being a Saturday and me being me, I missed this email completely and didn’t actually receive the news until Monday, but that’s pretty much par for the course, and it didn’t result in toooo much of a delay.

In the end it was Yesterday (Tuesday) that we nipped down to Hanson’s Opticians. It was a painless ordeal, a simple matter of popping on the new gegs, reading from a chart comprised of the same paragraph in ever decreasing font sizes, and then glancing across the road to check on distance vision. Not perhaps the most comprehensive of experiments, but, as I could read the bottom line in comfort and the co-op and associated buildings were in sharp and detailed focus, I guess it was good enough.

With me taken care of, Tina went through the same rigmarole, although in her case, the experiment was cut in two. One part for her ‘everyday’ glasses, and one for her ‘readers’.

And then off we jogged (well…you know).

Eye Strain
The drive home was a teeny-tiny bit disconcerting as my eyes adapted to the extra help, and I should probably have stuck to my old glasses for that particular trip, but soon enough, my old eyes adapted and ever since then the difference has been palpable.

For the first time in ages I went to bed last night feeling tired but not tired eyed. For the first time, in yonks I’m tip-tapping on the laptop without feeling like it’s a chore. I did the Crusader Crossword without straining to see the clues. I’m even considering reading a chapter of the book I never finished on holiday and even doing a spot of writing!

They may seem like small things, but the feeling is one of freedom. I think for a while now I’ve been plodding on, making do. I haven’t exactly been blind or particularly impaired, but my eyes have had to work that much harder, even with my glasses on. A strain in every sense of the word.

To Infinity!
It’s almost like I’ve been driving with a partially flat tyre. Progress was possible, but it wasn’t ideal, and that cost me both mileage and speed. Now, it’s like the tyres are fully inflated, the car fully charged, and the warpdrive engaged or is that only spaceships? I forget.

Whatever the case, the feeling is one of liberation. I might not be the most outdoorsy type, and my interest and distractions remain of the seated, indoors variety, but that only goes to underline the difference.

No, it may not be the most earth-shattering change, but it’s something that makes a massive difference, perhaps one greater than I ever thought.

Until next time!
