Women Drivers!

Hello, dear reader!

You know that old saying about buses? Well that’s happened to me this week.

Not that any actual buses were involved, you understand, or that there’s been much waiting on my part (so there goes the analogy), but two astoundingly similar pieces of news reached these old ears, and with them, two reasons for celebration.

Oh, and neither of them had anything, directly, to do with me.

Ladies night
No, today’s post will mainly feature two amazing ladies. My sister-in-law, Jen, and my niece, Gabby who both passed their driving tests this week.

Now, the ladies in question are at quite different stages of their lives, Gabby being in her very early twenties, and Jen being—not, but I’m sure both ladies will find their new found status to be life changing.

It takes me back (he says, making it all about him again) to my late teens and my own driving test. I can’t remember the date, not even the month, but the weather was fine—dry and not too sunny, and, by some minor miracle, I actually managed to pass at the first attempt (please note, this was after nearly two years of lessons, and I wrote the car off pulling out onto a dual carriageway a couple of weeks late, so I’m not bragging).

Open World
And, my, how the world opened up for me. Suddenly I could go anywhere I wanted, quickly, easily, and without having to beg for lifts from my mum or dad. I was free to explore. Free to push my boundaries without the militaristic planning required to navigate public transport in a wheelchair (This would have been the mid nineties, a time when buses still had that really rather helpful stripper pole inside the door, and no pull out ramp to get round the step). I don’t think it’s going too far to say that passing my test was life changing.

And this is my hope for the girls. I hope that life opens up—that the world shrinks that little bit, and independence becomes that little less expensive to buy. I know, Jen, having a disabled husband and a teen with medical conditions in tow, will gain major benefits from her own mode of transport, and Gabby will find all the options of a young lady making her way in the world so much easier to navigate.

Plus, they can now fight over who gets to drive me to the pub, so—Bonus!

Until next time…
