Make Do And Mend

Hello dear readers!

I'm Baaa-aaack.

Yes, it would seem that rumours of my demise have indeed proven to be greatly exaggerated and, after a three week and one day hiatus, The Seated Perspective show is firmly back on the road and apparently... attracting admirers (Thank you Bethany).

So, what's been going on in the last 22 days, you ask? Well quite a lot actually.

Hard Reboot
My somewhat enforced absence from these hallowed bloggy walls has been due to some technological issues which are commonly known as, and I hope I've got the terminology right here, a busted laptop.

By this I don't mean it suddenly turned into a pop band that jump around with guitars. No, this was more a total failure of said machine to charge and therefore switch on. As you can imagine this was not conducive to writing a blog on said machine. The Mrs's IPad was available, but to be honest I've never really got the hang of those on screen keyboards.

However, after an inordinate time back at the manufacturers, the technical faults are now conquered (touch wood). My beloved laptop thus restrored to me, I can once more trouble you, my dear readers, to put up with my attempts to entertain and inform... Sorry.

So, back to what has actually been happening then.

All Go
Well, long term readers will know of the house purchase we (myself and my wife, Tina that is) have recently made and they will also be aware of the work needed to transform said abode into a habitable environment. The good news on this front is that the decorator has been in for over a week now and the electrician is due to start shortly as well. This will hopefully lead to a house we can at least put up with when we move in at the end of this week (yes this week!).

Now, the new house is being left firmly to the professionals (no, not Bodie and Doyle) but that doesn't mean that we are left sitting on our hands, not by a long shot.

The house we are currently residing in has taken a few knocks in the time we have been here. This constitutes four years (actually four years to the very day when we move on the 22nd. (Spooky or what?) and in that time we have made a few... discoveries.

Scratch That
The main one was the shocking revelation that cats and textured wallpaper are not very compatible. In fact by the way huge gouges have been made in the tasteful blown vinyl I would say they are decidedly... unmixy. I'm just undecided whether their vandalism is due to some unspoken commentary on taste or their own taste for wanton destruction.

Whatever the reason, the fact of the matter was, that if we were to get any of our deposit returned, the chucking up of some replacement paper was always going to be a necessity.

Now there is a little bit of maths to be taken into account here. Obviously we know how much the deposit is, and there would be no point in spending anywhere near that amount of money in order to get it back, especially when the necessary work is taken into account. This meant a good bit of detective work was in order to find the very cheapest paper we could. This still wan't all that cheap.

Mea Culpa
Luckily we have a number of good friends and relations, and offers to help put the stuff up have been plentiful. Armed with this invaluable aid we have managed to strip the walls in the lounge (myself concentrating on the botom half, I know my strenghs), and are halfway through installing a fresh layer of that oh, so beautiful anaglypta. The landlady is coming tomorrow for a final inspection, so enquiries as to the possibility of painting may well be made at that point, in regard to the hall, bedroom, and conservatory. We do have extremely thorough cats.

The next thing on the list is the paint work. This definitely needs a refresh and this is in no small amount due to your very own friendly neighbourhood seated person.

I Am Groot
Handily enough the doorways in the house are wide enough to permit wheelchair access. This is a definite boon when it comes to moving from room to room and makes such everyday tasks as going to bed at night or visiting the smallest room in the house, that little bit easier (or to put it another way... possible).

The issue is that the clearance either side is somewhat minimal and over the years this has led to a little light scuffing. This only really needs a coat of gloss to be put right, and paint is cheap so no huge worries there. Hopefully this one will be a quick fix. I will be sad to paint over the patch that looks amazingly similar to Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy however.

The last item on the list is the garden which apparently, if left untended, reverts to a deep dark wood type state. To solve this issue we have secured the services of a local gardening service and, as I type, the sounds of reasonably heavy machinery are emanating from this very area. It's taken an investment, but I'm confident the gentleman with the chainsaw can get the jungle back to something resembling a lawn surrounded by a few bushes.in time for us to leave it with a clear conscience.

This Old House
After that we're just looking at the clearing and packing up of four years worth of memories. Our time here has been eventful. We've both had more than our share of ups and downs, but on the whole I think we've been happy in this old house, despite the increasingly erratic plumbing and the unchallenged rising damp in one corner of the lounge.

Four years have passed quickly but now the time is right to move on; on to new adventures, new challenges and, of course... our lovely new home.

Until next time ...
